Google Business Profile suspended? What to do, step by step

By Ali Hassan3 min read

Key takeaways

  • Don't create a new profile while yours is suspended. It usually makes recovery harder.
  • Find and fix the likely guideline issue before you appeal.
  • Prepare real evidence that your business exists at the address you list.

A suspended Google Business Profile can stop calls from Google overnight. The good news is that many suspensions are caused by fixable setup problems. The bad news is that a rushed appeal, made before the cause is fixed, is often rejected.

Here’s the process I follow.

What a suspension usually means

Google suspends profiles when it believes something breaks its guidelines for representing a business. You may see a notice in your profile, receive an email, or simply notice your listing has disappeared from Maps.

Google rarely tells you the exact reason, so the first job is working out the most likely cause.

Common reasons profiles get suspended

  • Keywords added to the business name. “Smith Dental” is fine. “Smith Dental | Best Dentist Lahore Teeth Whitening” is not, unless that’s your real registered name.
  • Address problems. Virtual offices, mailbox services and coworking spaces without staffed presence often cause trouble. So does showing an address when you serve customers at their location.
  • Service-area setup mistakes. Service businesses that don’t receive customers at their address should hide it and set a service area instead.
  • Multiple profiles for one business. Duplicate listings, or separate profiles for each service, at the same location.
  • Sudden big edits. Changing the name, address and category at the same time can trigger a review.
  • Website or category mismatch. The website, categories and business details don’t clearly describe the same business.

Step 1: Don’t make it worse

Two things to avoid:

  • Don’t create a new profile. Creating a replacement while the original is suspended can make it look like an attempt to get around the suspension.
  • Don’t keep editing randomly. Every change can trigger another review. Plan the fixes, then make them once.

Step 2: Fix the likely cause

Review your profile against Google’s guidelines for representing your business:

  1. Is the name exactly what appears on your signage, registration and website?
  2. Is the address a real location where you operate, staffed during your hours?
  3. If you visit customers, is your address hidden with a service area set?
  4. Are the categories accurate for what you actually do?
  5. Does your website match the name, address and phone on the profile?

Fix anything that doesn’t match before you appeal.

Step 3: Gather evidence

Google may ask you to prove that your business is real and operates where you say it does. Have these ready, depending on your business:

  • Business registration or licence
  • A recent utility bill or lease showing the business name and address
  • Photos of permanent signage outside and inside the premises
  • A short video showing the street, the signage, the entrance and the inside of the business
  • Proof of the business phone number

The details on your documents should match the profile exactly.

Step 4: Submit the reinstatement request

Use Google’s official reinstatement process, which you can reach from the suspended profile or through Google Business Profile Help. Fill it in carefully, upload clear evidence, and describe the changes you made.

Then wait. Google’s review can take from a few days to several weeks. Responding quickly to any follow-up requests helps.

If the appeal is rejected

Look again at what might still break the guidelines. Often there’s a second issue, such as an address that doesn’t qualify. A second appeal with the real problem fixed and stronger evidence has a better chance than repeating the first one.

Preventing the next suspension

  • Keep your business name clean, with no added keywords.
  • Make big changes one at a time.
  • Keep details consistent across your website and listings.
  • Give manager access only to people you trust, and remove old agencies.

If your profile is suspended and you’d like a second pair of eyes, I can review the likely cause and help with the appeal. No one can promise reinstatement, but a clean, accurate appeal gives you the best chance.
